Choosing Your Braces Colors

If you have traditional wire and bracket braces, you may also have to wear orthodontic elastics (small rubber bands) on your braces. These rubber bands are a vital part of your orthodontic treatment. They put additional pressure on your teeth, pulling them into proper alignment in ways that the braces alone can’t. When we talk about braces colors, we are talking about the colors of the colorful elastics, which must be changed periodically as your teeth move over time.

At Little Sunshine Dental Group, we offer several different elastic braces in various colors so that you can customize the look of your braces. Since you or your child will have to change the elastics frequently, you can change the look of your braces whenever you replace old rubber bands with new ones.

Tips for Choosing Braces Colors

You can choose any colors you like and do not have to stick to one color. Many of our young patients choose braces colors in their school colors, particularly if they are on the cheer squad or a sports team. It’s a wonderful way to show off school spirit. Others choose their favorite color or elastics that will go with a dress or outfit for a special occasion.

Avoid light or white colors if you want to make your teeth look whiter and brighter. They will make your teeth look yellow by comparison. Also, avoid brown or rust, as these have a “dirty” or dingy appearance. If you want your teeth to look whiter, opt for colors such as silver or clear. Navy and dark green are also good choices for brightening your teeth by contrast.

Popular Braces Colors

It is almost impossible to say which colors will be most popular, but some trends seem fairly consistent. Young women favor bright colors like pink, purple, turquoise, and jewel tones. Metallic elastics are also popular. Young men gravitate toward more somber shades such as bronze, burgundy, navy, and charcoal.

Many people choose their braces colors based on the seasons or their interests. We’ve mentioned school colors or the colors of your favorite sports team, but you can also coordinate your braces with the seasons. Pastels for spring, neon colors for summer, and rich fall shades of orange, red, and yellow for fall are wonderful. In the winter, ice blue, white, and purple look great.

Frequently Asked Questions About Braces Colors

What colors should I avoid for braces?

If your teeth are not as white as you’d like, avoid white elastics, which will make them look yellower. Yellow and brown aren’t good choices because they may make your teeth look stained. Dark green may make you look like spinach is stuck in your teeth. Clear and very light-colored braces will discolor more easily.

What are the most discreet brace colors?

Silver, white, or clear elastics blend in with your brackets and wires, making them more discreet and less noticeable. However, you will need to avoid eating certain foods like red sauces to avoid staining them.

How often can you change the color of your braces?

As often as you have to change your rubber bands. For most patients, the elastics are changed at least twice a day, giving you plenty of options for changing up your brace’s colors. You can even change them for special occasions! Red and green for Christmas, pastel pinks, blues, soft greens for Easter, and black and orange for Halloween.
