Orthodontic Retainers – Bronx, NY
Riverdale, Westchester & Kingsbridge, NY
Retainers are the next step in your orthodontic journey after your braces are removed. Almost every teen or adult who has braces must wear a mouth retainer for several months after their teeth have been moved into their correct positions. This phase is called retention. Retainers are mouthpieces that hold your teeth in their new positions until your bones, gums, and muscles adapt to the new teeth’ positions. Wearing your new retainer as instructed is crucial. Otherwise, your teeth may shift back to their original positions, and the benefits of your braces will be lost.
Types of Retainers
Retainers fall into three main categories:
- Hawley Retainers: These are made of metal wire and acrylic that fits on the roof of your mouth or behind your lower teeth. They are removable and adjustable.
- Clear Plastic Retainers: These are made from thin, clear plastic that fits securely over your teeth, providing a discreet and comfortable solution. These are also removable and more discreet, as there is no wire across the front of the teeth, unlike the Hawley retainers.
- Permanent or Fixed Retainers: For these, a thin wire is bonded to the back of your front teeth (usually lower) to keep them in place. These are not removable by the patient but can be removed by Dr. Schimmel in the future.
Why Do I Need a Retainer?
After braces are removed, your teeth can shift back to their original positions over time. A retainer helps maintain their new position by holding the teeth in their corrected places until they stabilize. Over time, they will “settle” into their new position. It’s an essential part of protecting the time and investment you make in orthodontic treatment.
FAQs About Retainers
Do I have to wear my retainer for the rest of my life?
While you may not need to wear it 24/7 forever, long-term wear (especially at night) is recommended to keep your teeth from shifting.
Can I eat with my retainer in?
Only fixed retainers can stay in while eating. Removable retainers should be taken out during meals. Handle your retainers with care. Retainers are easy to lose. If you take your retainers out, always place them in your retainer case for safety. More information on caring for your retainers.
How should I clean my retainer?
Use lukewarm water and a toothbrush daily. Avoid hot water, which can warp plastic retainers.
What’s the Difference Between a Mouth Guard and a Retainer?
A retainer holds your teeth in position after orthodontic treatment. A mouth guard protects teeth during sports or to prevent grinding (bruxism) at night. Mouth guards are usually thicker and cover more of the teeth, while retainers are made to preserve alignment.
What Do I Do if I Lost My Retainer?
Contact our office as soon as possible. The longer you go without a retainer, the more your teeth can shift. In some cases, a new mold or scan may be needed to create a replacement retainer.
How Should a Retainer Fit in Your Mouth?
A retainer should fit snugly without causing pain or pressure. It shouldn’t feel loose, nor should it pinch or rub against your gums. If it feels uncomfortable or doesn’t fit properly, it may need an adjustment or replacement.
How Do Retainers Work?
Retainers work by applying gentle pressure to keep your teeth in their correct position after wearing braces or aligners. Over time, your bone and gum tissues adjust to the new alignment, and the retainer helps guide that process.
How Long Will My Retainer Last?
With proper care:
- Clear plastic retainers typically last 6 months to a few years before needing replacement.
- Hawley retainers can last 5–10 years or more.
- Permanent retainers can last for many years, but they may require rebonding or repair if they become loose.
If your retainer is lost, loose, or broken, please contact our office immediately at Schimmel Orthodontic Associates office Phone Number(718) 548-4768. Delaying repair or replacement can lead to your newly minted smile shifting back to its former condition.
